"The recovery and extraction of critical data from damaged or deteriorating magnetic tape and optical media"
SpectrumData, one of the pioneers of data recovery from damaged and deteriorated tape and optical media, has been offering data recovery services which have to date successfully recovered hundreds of thousands of deteriorated or damaged tapes for organisations around the world.
Our data recovery methodologies and procedures ensure that your data is protected while the process of recovery is undertaken. Our typical data recovery process for tape and optical media includes:
- Media audit and diagnosis , monitoring and reporting the type and severity of damage observed
- Specialised heat treatment to harden binder and oxide layer of tapes
- Re-spooling, splicing and cleaning of tape surface
- A "hands on" recovery process of reading data from tape to disk in our internal "virtual tape" format which ensures the preservation and integrity of block structure, file marks and other important features of the tape are preserved
- From this "virtual tape" format either a new identical tape can be created, or the data can be converted or restored to disk files during proccessing
Our data recovery expertise includes the recovery of data from tape media suffering from:
- Peeling of the binder oxide layer
- Gouging of the binder either by the tape head, cleaning blades and/or other transport components
- Destruction of the media caused by tape drive wear or malfunctions
- Head adhesions (the binder melts and adheres the tape to the tape drive head)
- Stretched or snapped tapes
- Overwritten headers
- Submersion in water, mould growth and subjection to extreme temperatures
